Hydraulic Oil
Hydraulic oil is the central energy source of every hydraulic system and ensures power transmission, lubrication, cooling and wear protection for the equipment. The quality of the oil used has a significant influence on the service life of pumps, valves, motors and cylinders. Modern hydraulic oils consist of high-quality base oils and specially formulated additives that ensure pressure resistance, ageing stability and friction optimisation. In the LöSi® web shop, you will find a wide selection of hydraulic oils for mobile and stationary applications – including HVLP, HLP, biohydraulic and special oils for extreme conditions.
What is Hydraulic Oil?
Hydraulic oil is far more than just a lubricant – it is a liquid construction element. It serves as the primary energy carrier to transmit power from the pump to the cylinders and motors. At the same time, it must cool, lubricate, and protect the system against corrosion.
Modern hydraulic fluids are complex chemical compounds. They consist of high-quality base oils enriched with specific additives (active ingredients). These additives prevent foam formation, improve cold behavior, and minimize wear on metallic friction surfaces. The choice of the right oil is decisive for the efficiency (OEE) and service life of your entire system.
Advantages of Our Hydraulic Oils
Cheap oil is the most expensive decision you can make. Inferior fluids age faster, resinify valves, and lead to cavitation damage in pumps.
Rely on brand quality for:
- Wear Protection: Special AW additives (Anti-Wear) form a protective film on metal parts and prevent seizure at high pressure.
- Aging Resistance: High oxidation stability ensures that the oil does not "turn" or sludge even after thousands of operating hours.
- Air Release Property: Prevents foam formation in the tank, which would otherwise lead to spongy, jerking hydraulics ("springing").
- Seal Compatibility: Matched to common sealing materials (NBR, FKM) to prevent leaks caused by brittle seals.
Typical Areas of Application
Depending on the location of use, different oil types (standards according to DIN 51524) must be selected:
- Stationary Industry (HLP): For machine tools and presses in halls with constant temperatures. Here, the standard HLP oil is ideal.
- Mobile Applications (HVLP): Excavators, cranes, and agricultural machinery outdoors require HVLP oils. These have a high viscosity index (VI) and remain liquid even in frost and stable in heat.
- Forestry & Water Protection (HEES): In sensitive environments, rapidly biodegradable oils (bio-oil) are often legally required.
Selection Criteria & Technical Data
The wrong oil can destroy the pump during a cold start (too thick) or cause the lubricating film to break off in heat (too thin).
Mandatorily pay attention to these parameters:
- Viscosity Class (ISO VG): How "thick" is the oil at 40°C?
- ISO VG 32: Thin-bodied, often for winter operation or very long lines.
- ISO VG 46: The absolute standard for Central Europe (All-round).
- ISO VG 68: Thicker, for high temperatures or older machines with larger bearing clearance.
- Type (HLP vs. HVLP): Do you need an oil for indoors (HLP) or for outdoors with temperature fluctuations (HVLP)?
- Approvals: Does your machine manufacturer (OEM) require specific standards (e.g., Bosch Rexroth, Eaton)?
Expert Tip: Never mix different oil types (e.g., bio-oil with mineral oil), as this leads to flocculation and filter clogging!
