Planetary Gear Bos
A planetary gearbox is a particularly compact, powerful and high-torque gear system that is often used in conjunction with hydraulic motors. Thanks to the special arrangement of the sun gear, planetary gears and ring gear, a planetary gearbox offers a very high transmission ratio with minimal installation space. It is ideal for mobile machines, industrial plants and applications with high torque requirements. In the LöSi® web shop, you will find robust, low-maintenance planetary gearboxes in various transmission ratios, sizes and flange variants – perfectly matched to a wide range of hydraulic motors and applications.
What is a Planetary Gearbox?
A planetary gearbox (also called epicyclic gearing) is the master of power density in drive technology. Unlike ordinary spur gearboxes, power is transmitted here not just via one gear pair, but via several planet gears simultaneously, which rotate around a central sun gear.
This load distribution makes it possible to generate enormous torques in an extremely compact, coaxial housing. In hydraulics, they are often flanged directly to orbital or axial piston motors to drastically reduce their speed and increase the torque in the same ratio. It is the most efficient way to generate slow and powerful rotary movements.
Advantages of Our Planetary Gearboxes
Why do designers almost always rely on planetary gearboxes for winches or travel drives? Because no other system delivers so much power per cubic centimeter of installation space.
Technical superiority in detail:
- Maximum Torque Density: By distributing the load across e.g., three or four tooth flanks simultaneously, much higher forces can be transmitted than with conventional gearboxes.
- Compact Design: Ideal for installation in wheel hubs, drums, or tight machine frames.
- High Efficiency: Precise gearing ensures low friction losses and quiet operation.
- Durability: The symmetrical force distribution protects bearings and shafts, even under hard load changes (shock loads).
Typical Areas of Application
Planetary gearboxes are the "muscles" for heavy equipment. They are indispensable in:
- Forestry & Agricultural Technology: Drive of earth augers, cutters, feed mixers, and beet harvesters.
- Lifting Technology: Cable winches and crane slewing gears where holding force and torque count.
- Mobile Hydraulics: Wheel hub drives for construction vehicles (Track Drives).
- Industry: Agitators in biogas plants (low speed with high resistance).
Selection Criteria & Technical Data
The design must match the hydraulic motor exactly. A gearbox that is too weak will be "torn apart" by the motor.
Define these values before ordering:
- Gear Ratio (i): How slowly should the output turn? (Example: i=4 means the output turns 4x slower, but has 4x more power).
- Input Torque: Check if the gearbox is approved for the maximum torque of your hydraulic motor!
- Connection Pattern: Does the motor flange fit (SAE A, SAE B, Magneto)?
- Output Shaft: Do you need a cylindrical shaft with feather key, a splined shaft, or a hollow shaft?
Expert Tip: Pay attention to the thermal limit during continuous operation. Planetary gearboxes are built very tightly and can become hot at high speeds.
