What is a Hydraulic Cylinder?

A hydraulic cylinder (also called linear motor) is the "muscle" of your machine. It converts hydraulic pressure into a linear mechanical movement. Whether excavator arm, waste compactor, or log splitter – the cylinder is the component that performs the actual work.

It consists essentially of a cylinder barrel, in which a piston moves, and a piston rod that transmits the force outwards. The quality of the seals and the surface finish of the rod determine whether the cylinder stays tight for years or leaks quickly.

For the cylinder to fit and deliver the necessary force, the design and dimensions must be correct.

Decide based on these parameters:

  • Mode of Operation:
    • Single-acting: Only pushes (extends), retracts by load/spring (e.g., tipper). Has only one port.
    • Double-acting: Pushes and pulls (extending and retracting hydraulically). Has two ports. Standard for excavators/steering.
  • Dimensions:
    • Piston Ø: Determines the force (pressure area).
    • Rod Ø: Determines the pulling force and buckling strength.
    • Stroke: How far does the cylinder extend?
  • Mounting: Rod eye (spherical bearing), clevis, flange, or cross hole?

Expert Tip: For long strokes (e.g., over 1 meter), you must calculate the buckling load so that the piston rod does not bend under pressure!
