What is a Hydraulic Pump?

The hydraulic pump is the heart of every fluid power system. It converts mechanical energy (from the electric motor or combustion engine) into hydraulic energy. In doing so, it generates a volume flow, which in turn builds up pressure as soon as it meets resistance (e.g., a cylinder or motor).

Selection Criteria & Technical Data

The wrong pump can destroy the entire system (e.g., through cavitation or excess pressure).

Define these parameters exactly before buying:

  • Displacement (cm³/rev): How much oil is displaced per revolution? This determines the speed of your cylinders in combination with the rotational speed.
  • Design:
    • Gear Pump: Inexpensive, robust, loud, medium pressures.
    • Piston Pump: More expensive, high pressure, adjustable, efficient.
  • Direction of Rotation: Essential! Look at the shaft: Does the pump turn right (clockwise) or left? A wrong direction of rotation leads immediately to a defect.
  • Shaft & Flange: Tapered (1:8), splined shaft, or feather key? Which standard flange (Euro, SAE, Bosch) is needed?
