BSP screw fittings

The high-quality BSP screw connection in the LöSi® connection technology range offers you a proven solution for pipe and hose lines with British Standard Pipe (BSP) threads – especially in hydraulic systems where imperial connections are still established. These fittings are available in many variants: straight or angled, with reduced thread sizes, different bore sizes and designs for high pressures. A correctly selected BSP fitting ensures that your hydraulic lines can be operated in a leak-proof, reliable and durable manner.

What is a BSP Fitting?

A BSP (British Standard Pipe) fitting is the most frequently used "inch standard" worldwide in hydraulics (outside the USA). It is based on the so-called Whitworth pipe thread.

In contrast to metric fittings, the size here is specified in inches (e.g., G 1/2″). The special feature is the sealing method: While screw-in studs often seal via a soft seal at the thread neck, the connection from hose to fitting usually takes place via a universal 60° sealing cone. This makes BSP fittings extremely flexible and compatible with many international systems.

Advantages of Our BSP Fittings

Why is this British standard still so popular today? Because it is proven and universal. Almost all hydraulic pumps and cylinders have BSP connection ports as standard.

Your advantages at a glance:

  • International Compatibility: Standard in Europe, Asia, and Australia (often also referred to as "gas thread").
  • Versatile Sealing Systems: Seals reliably via the 60° cone (metal-to-metal or with O-ring) or flat-sealing by means of ED seal at the screw-in hole.
  • High Availability: Whether adapter, elbow, or T-piece – BSP components can be procured quickly worldwide.

Typical Areas of Application for BSP Fittings

The BSP fitting is the "glue" that holds various hydraulic components together. It is dominant in:

  • Pumps & Motors: The connections (ports) of gear pumps are almost always provided with G-threads.
  • Mobile Hydraulics (Asia/UK): Construction machinery from manufacturers such as JCB or Komatsu rely heavily on BSP adapters (often in combination with JIS).
  • Retrofit: Ideal for the maintenance of older machines where no metric standards were installed yet.
  • Pneumatics & Low Pressure: Here too, the G-thread is the absolute standard.

Selection Criteria & Technical Data

Attention, risk of confusion: BSP is not NPT! Both are "inch-based", but not compatible.

Check these parameters for correct identification:

  • Thread Form (G vs. R): Do you need a cylindrical thread (G), which seals via a sealing edge/sealing ring, or a tapered thread (R/Rp), which seals in the thread?
  • Sealing Cone: Does your fitting have a 60° cone? (Do not confuse with JIC 37°!).
  • Dimension: Common sizes are 1/4", 3/8", 1/2" up to 2". Measure the outer diameter and compare it with a BSP table.
  • Pressure Range: BSP fittings cover pressures up to approx. 315 - 400 bar (depending on size and manufacturer).

Pro Tip: Use adapters with an additional O-ring in the sealing cone to guarantee absolute freedom from leakage even under vibrations.
